Principal’s Message August

Bentleigh Secondary College was a proud nominee of the Australian Education Awards on 11 August 2023.

The Australian Education Awards serve as a beacon of excellence, demonstrating the contributions made by educators, institutions, and educational professionals in shaping the future of Australian education. With a profound commitment to celebrating innovation, dedication, and outstanding achievement, the Australian Education Awards annually bring together a diverse and passionate community of educational leaders, from primary and secondary schools. It was a privilege to be amongst some of the most outstanding government and independent schools in the country. It was delightful to be named one of the awardees for government school education,

Another exciting month of celebration as can be seen in the highlights of this e-news edition.

Girl Power Engineering

The University of Melbourne Girl Power Engineering and IT Program is designed to introduce and encourage young women from different backgrounds and schools to pursue a career in the field of Engineering.
 
Gaia and Alexandra of Year 9, were selected to participate in this program, held at Melbourne University. They met female engineers, who inspired them about their opportunities.

Monash Open Day

Our very own Mr Tissera was recently volunteering as a guest speaker at the Monash Education Open Day Clayton. As always he was an inspiring voice at the front of the room sharing his experiences. A number of 2023 Bentleigh Secondary College Year 11 and 12 students attended.
 


Medieval Europe Experience

Fantastic opportunity bringing to life and enhancing various aspects of the Medieval Europe History course that the Year 8 students are studying. 
We welcomed History Up Close to Bentleigh Secondary College as they truely do bring history to life! Encompasses aspects of life and conditions in a typical medieval community - from serfs and peasants to knights and nobility. We looked at castles, knights, diet, pottery, games and entertainment with a variety of hands on experiences.

House Dance & Drama - FINALS

Bentleigh Secondary College House Dance and Drama competition showcased some impressive dance moves and fierce competition on Thursday 10 August! Congratulations to all the houses! The final results:
💙Hawker – 84 points
💚Dendy – 83 points
❤️Fawkner – 79 points
💛Wickham – 77 points

Special mention to our Teachers and staff who showcased their own dance routine, and a big THANK YOU to the adjudicator Pedro.

Boys Netball

Congratulations to the Bentleigh Secondary College Boys Netball team on their victory at the Southern Metro Region Netball Finals!
Coming up is  the State Finals on August 28.


Minister Visit

Natalie Hutchins MP, Minister of Education and Nick Staikos MP, visited our school on Monday 14 August 2023.  During the visit, the Minister of Education engaged with staff and students discussing curriculum and current educational  challenges. 



World War One Incursion

The wonderful History Up Close  incursion offered  our Year 9 students a valuable opportunity to delve deeper into the past. Exploring artifacts, uniforms, food, and historical views helping them gain a richer appreciation for the intricacies and complexities of World War One.
 


Inverted Pyramid Challenge

We kicked off Science Week on Monday 14 August with the Inverted Pyramid Challenge and Marshmallow Spaghetti Tower. Amazing activities to promote innovation and creativity.  Given the theme for National Science Week is Innovation we think the students were off to a great start!


Principal for a Day

Bentleigh Secondary College is proud to announce a unique opportunity for student leadership and empowerment. Harry Bergmeier, a remarkable Year 12 student, was  chosen to take on the role of Principal for a Day on 16 August 2023. 

This initiative aims to provide students with a first hand experience in decision-making and school administration.
Harry Bergmeier, participated in various administrative duties, such as leading morning announcements, observing classes, and meeting with teachers and staff. Harry also had the chance to share his ideas and insights to further enhance the school environment. In addition, Harry met the Department of Education Deputy Secretary, Dr David Howes, completed learning walk observations in classrooms, addressed students in assemblies, attended and presented the Principal's Report, including the Pre Review School Evaluation Report to School Council. 

This initiative aligns with Bentleigh’s commitment to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where students can grow both academically and personally. By offering this opportunity, the school aims to inspire other students to take on leadership roles and be actively involved in shaping their educational experience.

 



Science Quiz

Anyone else as excited as Mr K about the General Science quiz and chemistry demonstrations during National Science Week.

Matildas - World Cup Semi Finals

Our college was a buzz around the success of the Matildas reaching the World Cup Semi Finals.  On Wednesday 16 August, our students and teacher Sally Hudson were interviewed by media crews in regard to our very own Bentleigh Alumni  and Matildas star Steph Catley. TALK MONEY

Thank you Talk Money with Ecstra Foundation for inspiring our Year 10 Learning Leadership class.  Providing young Australians with financial education can empower them to make informed decisions about money. 

 

The interactive workshop on various aspects of finance was a great way to engage students and help them develop essential life skills. It's crucial for the younger generation to have a solid understanding of financial concepts to navigate their financial future effectively. 
Talk Money is a free financial education program that teaches young Australians money lessons for life and aims to help students be confident when talking about money and to make informed financial decisions. 

Delivered by talented facilitators, they offer interactive workshops on “Talking about Money”, “Spending and Saving Money” and “Making Money Work”. â€‹The program is designed for students in Years 5-10 and has been developed in collaboration with education experts and a financial education advisory group.
