It's wonderful to hear about the culinary adventures of our Year 9 budding chefs! Cooking can indeed be a fantastic way to foster creativity, teamwork, and enjoyment in the kitchen. Making shortbread biscuits is a fun and delicious activity that allows young chefs to explore various aspects of cooking and baking.
Here are some of the valuable skills and experiences they gained:
Following Instructions: Baking requires careful attention to detail and following step-by-step instructions. This helps students improve their ability to follow directions accurately.
Measurement and Math: Cooking involves precise measurements, which can reinforce math skills. Students learn about fractions, ratios, and conversions while measuring ingredients.
Creativity: While baking, there's often room for creativity, whether it's in the decoration of the biscuits or experimenting with different flavors or shapes.
Teamwork: Cooking together encourages teamwork and communication. Students work in pairs or small groups, dividing tasks and coordinating to create the final product.
Patience and Time Management: Baking teaches the importance of patience and time management. Many recipes require waiting for dough to chill or cookies to bake, emphasizing the value of planning and patience.
Problem-Solving: If something doesn't turn out perfectly, students have the opportunity to problem-solve and think critically about what went wrong and how to improve next time.
Pride in Accomplishment: Successfully creating a dish, like these adorable shortbread biscuits, can boost students' self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment.
Appreciation for Food: Cooking from scratch often deepens one's appreciation for the effort and care that goes into making food. It can encourage healthier eating habits and an interest in food quality.
Enjoyment of the Process: Cooking is not just about the end result but also about enjoying the process. It's a chance to have fun and be creative in the kitchen.
Overall, this cooking experience likely left our Year 9 chefs with not only delicious shortbread biscuits but also valuable life skills and memorable moments. Cooking is a life skill that can serve them well in the future, and it's wonderful that they had the opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time.

Regionals Update: On Tuesday 24 October our Year 7 team represented us at the Regionals, at the Greater Dandenong Table Tennis Association. Although we didn't come home with the chocolates, it was a fantastic day out, and we're proud of their efforts!
It's great to hear about our Year 9 and10 girls' in the AFL 9's Gala Day pilot program run by AFL Victoria. Despite the challenging weather conditions, it's clear that the students had a fantastic time and showed their talent and enthusiasm for the sport.
Lois D's 7-goal performance, Mary P's contribution with 2 goals, and the commentary skills of Gyspy F and Jorja B certainly made for some exciting moments during the day. Congratulations to the blue team, led by India F, for their victory.
It's always inspiring to see young talents shine in sports, and it sounds like your team had a memorable day despite the weather.
Kudos to Team Bentleigh for making it happen!
