Year 12 Trial Exam Schedules

We are fast approaching the end of the year exams and in order to best prepare our Bentleigh students who are studying a Year 12 subject(s) we will be holding trial exams during the week of September 11 through to September 15. As a result of this all Year 11 and 12 VCE classes will be cancelled for the week to allow students an opportunity for success during their trial exams. Please note that Friday afternoon there will be no scheduled exams due to our whole school event: "Bentleigh's Got Talent"

Trial exams enable students to prepare for their final exams and provides a highly valuable opportunity to receive individual feedback on areas of success and sections that require refining and improvement.

As an additional resource for our VCE students, we will also be running revision classes during the school holidays where all students who are studying a Year 12 subject are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Attached please find the trial exam and the School Holiday Revision schedule.
Students who have an exam clash should come to the Senior School office to arrange an alternate time to complete their exam(s). Students undertaking a VET will also need to re-schedule their exams as VET will take priority over trial exams.

Wishing everyone success now and for end of year exams coming up

Year 9 Food Technology

On Monday 11 September our budding chefs whipped up some magic in the kitchen! 🌟 They rolled, cut, and baked these cute little shortbread biscuits that are almost too adorable to eat...almost! 😋

It's wonderful to hear about the culinary adventures of our Year 9 budding chefs! Cooking can indeed be a fantastic way to foster creativity, teamwork, and enjoyment in the kitchen. Making shortbread biscuits is a fun and delicious activity that allows young chefs to explore various aspects of cooking and baking.
Here are some of the valuable skills and experiences they gained:
Following Instructions: Baking requires careful attention to detail and following step-by-step instructions. This helps students improve their ability to follow directions accurately.
Measurement and Math: Cooking involves precise measurements, which can reinforce math skills. Students learn about fractions, ratios, and conversions while measuring ingredients.
Creativity: While baking, there's often room for creativity, whether it's in the decoration of the biscuits or experimenting with different flavors or shapes.
Teamwork: Cooking together encourages teamwork and communication. Students work in pairs or small groups, dividing tasks and coordinating to create the final product.
Patience and Time Management: Baking teaches the importance of patience and time management. Many recipes require waiting for dough to chill or cookies to bake, emphasizing the value of planning and patience.
Problem-Solving: If something doesn't turn out perfectly, students have the opportunity to problem-solve and think critically about what went wrong and how to improve next time.
Pride in Accomplishment: Successfully creating a dish, like these adorable shortbread biscuits, can boost students' self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment.
Appreciation for Food: Cooking from scratch often deepens one's appreciation for the effort and care that goes into making food. It can encourage healthier eating habits and an interest in food quality.
Enjoyment of the Process: Cooking is not just about the end result but also about enjoying the process. It's a chance to have fun and be creative in the kitchen.
Overall, this cooking experience likely left our Year 9 chefs with not only delicious shortbread biscuits but also valuable life skills and memorable moments. Cooking is a life skill that can serve them well in the future, and it's wonderful that they had the opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time.

R U OK? Day

This year R U OK? Day falls on Thursday 14 September, an annual National Day of Action and a reminder that every day is the day to check in with your friends, family and colleagues. Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm –– are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics, and societal expectations, are contributing to these issues. It's therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health, and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.

R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention year round by urging people to invest time in personal relationships and empowering informal support networks to identify signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, “Are you OK?”

Engaging in R U OK?Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it's a commitment to our students' overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued, and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK?Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.

This Special Report provides guidance on how to talk to your child about mental health and engage in meaningful discussions. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please consider seeking medical or professional help.

It's great to hear about our Year 9 and10 girls' in the AFL 9's Gala Day pilot program run by AFL Victoria. Despite the challenging weather conditions, it's clear that the students had a fantastic time and showed their talent and enthusiasm for the sport.
Lois D's 7-goal performance, Mary P's contribution with 2 goals, and the commentary skills of Gyspy F and Jorja B certainly made for some exciting moments during the day. Congratulations to the blue team, led by India F, for their victory.
