Year 8 IBL Smoothie Bar

The IBL project is a guided inquiry-based project. Students work through the process of setting up a food-based business.

Students are off grid for one week working with their normal timetabled teachers (no ‘normal’ timetabled classes). Students still attend their electives and Year level Sport class.

Throughout this project, the goal is to engage students with their learning. We give them the space to learn something new and move them away from a ‘we do a project to get a mark on our reports’ mindset.

A series of student goals have been developed as our ‘success criteria’ for students with the aim of developing their 21st century skills.

  1. To assist them with the application and synthesis of knowledge and skills
  2. To encourage their critical and creative thinking
  3. To motivate them to “think outside the box”
  4. To develop higher order thinking skills
  5. To increase responsibility and decision-making skills
  6. To build their communication skills
  7. To assist students in group work

Morrisby Interviews

During week 2 of Term 2 our Year 9 students started thinking about their future, using the Morrisby Online Careers Discovery Tool. Interviewers (Trained Professionals) from an external agency assist students to navigate the world of career options. They help students explore a variety of educational pathways based on:
  • student data including;
  • aptitude assessments,
  • interests,
  • personality and
  • learning styles.

These course counselling meetings provide advice to students based on the results of each student’s Morrisby report

Careers Expo Year 12

On Thursday, 18 April 2024, we facilitated a successful CAREERS EXPO on-site!

What an exciting event! It is fantastic to see the opportunities provided to students through the annual Careers Expo at Bentleigh Secondary College. Offering access to various tertiary institutions and training organizations, along with innovative experiences like Virtual Reality, can truly ignite students' curiosity and passion for their future careers. The collaboration between the no less than the twenty-three exhibitors and students is shaping a future filled with endless possibilities. Congratulations on hosting such a successful event!

The guest stallholders  ranged from leading Universities, Tafes, Education Providers, and Industry Employment Experts came to the college for the highly anticipated event. Students were able to speak with stallholders about careers and pathway opportunities available to them and were able to collect pamphlets of information relevant to their pathway goals.

To minimise interruption to valuable Year 12 class time, students attended the expo during lunch breaks, study periods, and/or afterschool.
Families were also welcome to attend the afterschool session to join their student in speaking to stallholders.

Subject Selections 2025

Bentleigh Secondary College traditionally begins subject selections in Term 2 to provide early guidance on the types of courses that students would like to pursue in their Senior School. To better aid in the selection process we have allocated times during the beginning weeks of Term 2 for students to meet with teachers and our Careers Counsellor Ms Rebecca Poulos to discuss subjects and career pathways moving forward.

Students are required to choose from subjects offered as both core subjects (English and Mathematics) and from a selection of elective subjects. Students may also elect to choose a VCE or TAFE subject to study.

Students can:

  • Check this Website for the Middle School (for Year 10 Subjects) and senior School Handbook (for VCE subjects).
  • Read about the different subjects, talk to teachers, and make your selections.
  • Look at all the wonderful VET subjects on offer
  • Consider what field you like to be involved in after you finish high school?

Yakult - Business Management

On Monday, 15 April 2024 our students had an enriching experience!

Immersing students in real-world operations at a company like Yakult Australia can offer them firsthand exposure to concepts they learn in the classroom.  Students applied their knowledge of Operations Management by observing the day-to-day operations of the Yakult factory. The production of goods and services is a core objective of businesses. Effective management of the process of transforming inputs into outputs is vital to the success of a business, both in terms of maximising the efficiency and effectiveness of the production process and meeting the needs of stakeholders.
Students gathered information during this excursion regarding operations management and assessed the best and most responsible use of available resources to produce a quality final good or service in a competitive, global environment.

Huge thanks to Yakult Australia for the enlightening experience!
