At Bentleigh Secondary College, we are proud to offer a dynamic and well-established Languages program from Year 7 through to Year 12. Students begin their language learning journey by choosing either French or Japanese in Year 7, with language study compulsory through to Year 9. From there, students have the opportunity to continue their chosen language into VCE, with additional languages also available through a distance education program.

Our junior program is centred on engagement, curiosity, and enjoyment. We bring language learning to life through interactive activities, music, and cultural experiences, including opportunities such as a Japan Tour, helping students connect language with real world contexts.
In the senior years, preparation begins early. From Year 10, students are supported to build confidence, refine their skills, and develop the resilience needed to succeed in the challenges of VCE. We provide targeted support through conversation clubs, cultural clubs, and dedicated exam preparation sessions held both before and after school.
Studying a language at VCE level is highly rewarding. Languages are recognised as academically rigorous subjects, and their results are scaled up to reflect this level of challenge. More importantly, language learning opens doors to a wide range of future career opportunities in an increasingly globalised world.

Language learning at Bentleigh is more than just a subject, it’s a journey of discovery, connection, and growth and we celebrate this journey each year during Languages Week, where students take part in fun, immersive activities that highlight the value and excitement of learning another language.
Our aim is to equip students not only with language skills, but with the confidence, cultural understanding, and global perspective needed to thrive beyond the classroom. Whether students continue their studies into VCE or carry their skills into future pathways, they leave our program as curious, capable, and globally minded individuals ready to engage with the world.
