“Schools are not made of buildings”
Moorabbin, of which Bentleigh was a part, was Victoria’s most rapidly expanding municipality and in 1956 Bentleigh High School was added to the list of thirteen schools to be constructed by the Department in that year. And so, at the start of the 1956 school year, secondary aged student’s in the Bentleigh area were requested to assemble at the grandstand of the Bentleigh Football Netball Club to be part of Bentleigh High School. On that day 176 secondary aged students assembled at the Grandstand of the Bentleigh Football Club to be a part of Bentleigh High School.
Bentleigh High School enjoyed respect and overwhelming community support and Bentleigh Secondary College is now enjoying the same.
Whilst the buildings that occupied so much of the planning and council and parental efforts and time during the early days of Bentleigh High School remain essentially the same today they still occupy much of the planning and council and parental efforts and time today.
Roy Bragge saw us through the times of the amalgamation and he wrote after being in schools for five decades “Have things really changed over the decades? No, They have remained fairly constant, because schools are still schools, where teachers are teachers and students… well, believe it or not, students are still the “things, creatures, ones” who make the schools tick” So you see, Mr. L.Cooke was correct “Schools are not made of buildings.” It is the people in those buildings who really matter.
