STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)

At Bentleigh Secondary College, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) provides students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences that build curiosity, creativity and critical thinking.

STEAM learning connects classroom knowledge with real-world applications through practical investigations, excursions, incursions and university partnerships.

Students develop their scientific understanding and problem-solving skills through authentic learning experiences that increase in depth and complexity across all year levels.

Students participate in a range of real-world learning opportunities including Moorooboon Wetlands Ecology and Water Monitoring, where they investigate ecosystems, biodiversity and water quality through fieldwork and environmental data collection. Whole-school engagement in National Science Week further enhances student interest in science through interactive activities, experiments and challenges.

The College has strong partnerships with leading universities and organisations to provide students with extension and enrichment opportunities. These include VCE Chemistry Spectroscopy Symposiums in collaboration with Monash University and the University of Melbourne, offering students exposure to advanced scientific techniques and research applications. Gifted and Talented Science students also participate in the Monash BioEyes Incursion, providing enriched biological science experiences. In Year 10, students engage in the Advanced Science Monash Engineering Challenge, developing engineering design thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills.

Students further apply their learning through a range of excursions and applied science experiences. VCE Biology and Psychology students visit Melbourne Zoo to explore animal behaviour, conservation and biological systems in a real-world context. VCE Physics students undertake investigations at Luna Park, applying concepts such as motion, forces and energy in practical environments. Year 8 students participate in a Geology Incursion, developing foundational knowledge of rocks, minerals and earth processes.

Innovation and challenge-based learning is embedded throughout the STEAM program. Year 7 students take part in the Marble Run Challenge, where they design, build and test systems to explore energy transfer and engineering principles. In Year 10, students may select Forensics and Astronomy electives, where they investigate forensic science techniques and astronomical concepts through inquiry-based learning.

Through these experiences, students are encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively and apply scientific and mathematical understanding to real-world problems. STEAM at Bentleigh Secondary College prepares students with the skills, confidence and capabilities needed for future study, training and careers in a rapidly changing world.
