The VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) is a two-year applied learning program within the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Designed for senior secondary students (Years 11 and 12) who prefer practical, hands-on learning, the VCE VM does not require an ATAR for university entry.
Replacing the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) from 2023, the VCE VM provides direct pathways into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education, training, or the workforce.
Key Features
- Applied Learning: Focuses on real-life applications, practical projects, and workplace experiences rather than purely theoretical study.
- No External Exams / ATAR: Students are assessed through classroom activities, projects, and work experiences. The only exam is the General Achievement Test (GAT).
- VET Component: Students complete at least 180 nominal hours of Vocational Education and Training (VET) at a Certificate II level or above.
- Flexible Structure: The program includes Structured Workplace Learning, allowing students to gain real workplace experience as part of their studies.
- 16-Unit Requirement: Students complete at least 16 units over two years, including core studies such as Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related Skills, and Personal Development Skills.
Advantages
- Employability Edge: Prepares students with practical, industry-relevant skills.
- Industry Exposure: Structured work placements and VET programs allow students to explore career pathways early.
- Flexibility: Students can tailor their studies to interests such as construction, health, hospitality, IT, or beauty.
Our Program Strength
A key strength of our VCE VM program is our partnership with Head Start, supporting students to undertake School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) while completing their studies. Through Head Start, students can:
- Gain paid, hands-on industry experience
- Develop real workplace skills
- Build valuable employer connections
This pathway allows students to begin apprenticeships or traineeships during school, creating a seamless transition into full-time employment or further training beyond Year 12.
